Adolescents (age 12-17 years)

Adolescence is a time of immense physical and social change. Typically, most teenagers demonstrate difficulties with mood and emotional regulation but for those with ADHD, these difficulties can be exacerbated. In particular, persistent or long-standing negative feedback from others means that these teens are vulnerable to low self-esteem and can be underdeveloped in self-efficacy and adequate coping strategies.

Therapy aims to meet the needs of the individual, but most teens will require building a trusting relationship with the therapist in which they can explore and make sense of their experiences, identify and practice positive coping strategies, build resilience and develop and nurture personal strengths.

 

Adults

In recent years ADHD has become more recognised in Adults. However, for many, receiving a diagnosis is only the start of unpacking a lifetime of confusion, despair and emotional issues such as low self-esteem and a negative self-concept. Studies suggest that 75% to 80% of adults with ADHD also have disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and substance misuse.

Working together we can identify practical and creative ways to recover from past traumas, unhelpful thought processes and to change unwanted or habitual behaviours.

ADHD positive believes that despite the complications and difficulties experienced from unrecognised and unsupported ADHD, those with the condition most frequently demonstrate great resilience, determination, creativity and ingenuity. A major emphasis of therapy will involve supporting you to identify and develop your areas of strength, aspirations and personal goals.
